Since I was little I have loved Elizabethan clothing. What is there not to love? The drama of the portraits, the bling, the huge skirts, the luxurious fabrics...swoon. Just recently I decided to try my hand, once again, at making the clothing from back then. I did this quite a bit as a child: cutting up dress up clothes to make things I thought were "historical". Back then I referred to the <a href="http://www.elizabethancostume.net/">Elizabethan Costume Page</a>. Which is still there, helpful as ever. They have a lovely little thing called a <a href="http://www.elizabethancostume.net/custompat/">custom corset pattern generator</a>, which takes the guesswork out of drafting patterns. You enter your measurements in and voila, a set of instructions is produced for creating your own bodice pattern. Once I had that, I did some research on colors and shapes and fabrics.<br />
<br />
Note: There are special papers you can buy for drafting, but paper bags work good too!<br />

<a href="http://www.stgeorgenorth.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/MAAS_Costume_Standards_2nd_Ed.224113649.pdf">Here</a> you will find a lovely bit of information on the clothing of the lower and middle classes and the plethora of colors available to Elizabethans. I chose to do a middle class lady, roughly 1570's. I urge you to look closely at the painting below. You will see clothing across all classes, and all stages (there is even a nursing baby.) The colors represented are here in full force also.<br />

<br />
This was my first adventure, so I'm not going to lie, I didn't really get every little detail of what I was aiming for down. Because I was in Florida, I knew I needed something more manageable than wool, which is what the kirtle would traditionally be made of. And since I was on a budget, I decided to forgo linen as an alternative, even though that is the coolest option. I settled instead on a pair of 100% cotton twill curtains from Ikea, which I actually already had. They were just laying there in my closet asking to be transformed, so off I went to dye them. Purely out of preference, but also not too far from a color in the link above, I got a dusty teal out of both panels. I then set about sewing the interlining boning channels. (You can see here, the interlining is the blue color <span style="background-color: white;">before </span>dye, and I must have cut it out before I did.)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Clearly the Elizabethans did not have plastic. But in this case I was looking for something that was washable. I found a great boning in plastic zip ties. You can get huge ones at the hardware store and they are easily cut with scissors. There is actually evidence that no boning was also common, believe it or not. I found this out from the incredibly knowledgeable people in the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/29374273995/">Elizabethan Costume Group</a> on Facebook. Trust me, they know their stuff! The interlining was stiffened with things such as hide glue, or pad stitched with wool. I actually found the bones to be fairly uncomfortable. I kicked them to the curb once I realized it was perfectly reasonable not to have them! I did opt to keep them just at the side laces to keep my lacing channels tidy. I was also not aiming to "corset", as many people do try to do. The Elizabethans did not do this. They simply created a flat front silhouette, without squishing the bodily organs in weird ways like those hard-core Victorians did. This makes for a very comfortable fit, actually. And it also straightens your back!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once I was done with fitting the interlining, I set out to "wrapping" the outer fabric around it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg62VNI8wPf-T5tixvE_2ZAOLTSPUi0Nx0JPoAXur2Rm6wtlQMltMoA7Y0L9e72zZkBA5lDL3ZXwY4o7WuvmHL-JxwESn7MBLkU_oIATFGBJl21yun2My4A18gVQHlcyocly5tLOn7e-C0/s1600/IMG_0474.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg62VNI8wPf-T5tixvE_2ZAOLTSPUi0Nx0JPoAXur2Rm6wtlQMltMoA7Y0L9e72zZkBA5lDL3ZXwY4o7WuvmHL-JxwESn7MBLkU_oIATFGBJl21yun2My4A18gVQHlcyocly5tLOn7e-C0/s640/IMG_0474.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The other step here is that I actually stitched the black trim after wrapping. But I know many people who do that first before they wrap. In that case you can do it by machine and it goes faster. In my case I could be more exact about placement but it took longer due to hand stitching. My inspiration for trim placement came from this sketch:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next step is making grommets. I did this with a buttonhole stitch and an awl. I poked the fabric and progressively stretched the hole wider and wider. Then did buttonole stitch all around the hole.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All ready to lace up! There are several steps I'm not showing here, like figuring out how to add a skirt to the bodice. I ended up knife pleating the front half and cartridge pleating the back. Then I made the cord with a hand lucet. It's essentially just one loop as though you are knitting. You keep pulling the loop through the next loop. Ties would have been finger looped, is my understanding, which is a different method. I did not feel confident enough to try this. I laced it with a huge embroidery needle. Not shown here also are the guards on the skirt. These were practical and pretty. They offered both a way to stiffen the hem (when padded with wool), keeping the skirts away from the legs as one walked, and also a little strip of fabric could switched out when it had gotten too stained or dirty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tip: Wait to cut your square neck smock until after you complete your kirtle. Then you have a neckline to trace.</div>

<b>The Partlet</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next was making the partlet. I downloaded the free partlet pattern by <a href="https://margospatterns.com/pages/free-patterns">Margo Anderson</a>. This is also where I got my coif pattern. Partlets were made out of linen or wool. The linen ones had a ruffle, and the wool ones did not. Here you can see both in action:</div>

<b>Coifs</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Making a coif is sort of an art form, I think everyone has rejects of some sort. I'm not sure I quite understand or appreciate its shape, but it is a staple of Elizabethan clothing, so there's that. I found my pattern seemed really small. I had to make it bigger. Someday I'll revisit it and get a better shape. For now, I hide it under a straw hat. </div>

I'm actually quite pleased with the second one. I think I got it to a good place. Later I would realize that the hair underneath makes a big difference. Women and girls taped their hair. This is when you braid or thread a ribbon around two braids wrapped around the head.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had short hair so I had to improvise:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHuU9kQRQqUkHdtTVFdLN_jHVbIm6RWhXR0eS63m9q-PJchqXoXuYMYXVU31bmmeA1G8b9M2Ae-gyN8-UTtc3OwSvko1K4yOiBvwcNkKya_rXa9Vbp6pmsFGqu7WCeffp0LaZI6KE-Kp0/s1600/IMG_1169.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="767" data-original-width="767" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHuU9kQRQqUkHdtTVFdLN_jHVbIm6RWhXR0eS63m9q-PJchqXoXuYMYXVU31bmmeA1G8b9M2Ae-gyN8-UTtc3OwSvko1K4yOiBvwcNkKya_rXa9Vbp6pmsFGqu7WCeffp0LaZI6KE-Kp0/s320/IMG_1169.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is yarn braided into my hair to give me length. You can also do this with hair extensions. Since it was going under a coif this worked.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Later I purchased <a href="http://www.tudortailor.com/">The Tudor Tailor</a> book, which is amazing. I highly recommend it. In it I saw another version of the coif, which works well with something called ear irons. Ear irons were a piece of metal, sort of like a headband, that extended over the ears and to which Elizabethans pinned their coifs. This kept them from flapping in the wind or falling off. I purchased these, from Louise Pass, and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/woodsholme">her wonderful shop</a> on Etsy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It took a lot of trial and error.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So, for Florida, I quickly learned this is not so suitable for tropical winds. But it does take a lovely picture.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here you see also the apron I made, also in the Tudor Tailor (seriously, just buy it). I even ironed it in squares as seen in the painting from 1585 below:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Pregnancy Fit</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Later, I tested the theory of whether this kirtle would hold up in pregnancy. Since kirtles were not corsets, there was actually no issue with wearing one. Elizabethans did not necessarily have pregnancy clothes. They simply laced looser or unlaced a bit of the bodice, covered by the apron in cases of front-lacing. For side lacing, I simply had a bit more smock showing (undershirt) which is totally acceptable. Here I am at 3 months pregnant:</div>

<br />
Being a mother has helped me to learn and grow so much. I've learned so much more about the natural ways to do things. From birth to nursing to baby-wearing, and also cloth diapering. I've been so interested in cloth diapers since I made my first tiny stash for Benji. Since then I've developed and tested a OS hybrid fitted diaper that lasts the night. That's right, such things exist! And it is entirely safe, environmentally friendly AND economical.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Two things I love: thread art and vintage images. Throw in some pics of oldish houses with character and you've got me sold. This is exactly what </span><a href="http://www.happy-red-fish.com/" style="text-align: left;">Happy Red Fish</a><span style="text-align: left;"> does. Happy Red Fish is a creative studio run by artist and designer Hagar Vardimon-van Heummen and is based in Amsterdam. The artist's statement says it all: "Love paper, love thread and adore the combination."</span></div>

I'm very happy with it. It's very small, but so is he! I used the quilt binding technique that <a href="http://www.heatherbaileydesign.com/HB_QuiltBinding.pdf">Heather Bailey</a> teaches. Her pdf. is free and super easy to follow. Just four more months to go!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I've not been motivated to do much, lately. But what I have done is start a quilt for my son. I ordered the fabric from <a href="http://www.heatherbaileystore.com/">Heather Bailey</a>. You should check out her <a href="http://www.heatherbailey.typepad.com/">blog</a>, too. It is so vibrant and rich. Since we are only slightly sure its a boy (he was laying in a very odd angle and our ultrasound was only a guess), I wanted to make something that was more gender neutral (and exciting). I love the combo of yellow, aqua, and red. In fact, here's some of my favorite inspiration:<br />
<br />

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCyByvBjBxQ0H25VmP3TZJ0zU_l82u61g5IwYvT3PFibfuUpmH8UUuDQTTLrEzC15g05Qfd6j1Q72uvnk0g35T3_gp4Wwpx_eBbiw65GJ127sjLq1DYRSzrF4ExthIgh47rPkVJ9jqHU/s1600/Modern-Nursery-Alphabet-Blocks2-550x418.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCyByvBjBxQ0H25VmP3TZJ0zU_l82u61g5IwYvT3PFibfuUpmH8UUuDQTTLrEzC15g05Qfd6j1Q72uvnk0g35T3_gp4Wwpx_eBbiw65GJ127sjLq1DYRSzrF4ExthIgh47rPkVJ9jqHU/s1600/Modern-Nursery-Alphabet-Blocks2-550x418.jpg" /></a></td></tr>

<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Combined with a red cotton pattern I already had from a costume project, it makes a lovely pattern:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhf986qPbyYvgPAPihO-5xSV_66Bbo6LlVbuNhxXYWrjXQyNBu3b_cqw1bgi-wmfhmpVtLdEDSpfwswRz7lyr8TrfnKeMt7Xhb4ZhhViF4SV7oWi0u4m3eytET7wWFOSOngs6nZWzKc9o/s1600/full.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhf986qPbyYvgPAPihO-5xSV_66Bbo6LlVbuNhxXYWrjXQyNBu3b_cqw1bgi-wmfhmpVtLdEDSpfwswRz7lyr8TrfnKeMt7Xhb4ZhhViF4SV7oWi0u4m3eytET7wWFOSOngs6nZWzKc9o/s1600/full.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, it's time to go in and tweak a few squares so that the random pattern feels balanced, and then off to sew!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I love the spring because it's the one time I really let myself be sweet, sappy and overly-romantic! Here's a few things I spotted on Etsy lately that got me in the Spring mood:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvYMqkyubRut9iqE4US1LVCaliX8arpcjSyKJl9CeCen3lK7dyrBnSt52RX-1KAa1iB09cGBqjCUIJ1OTlg4SQN9xkgAmz0cBPcYkQFIPNKIvlqvKAQApt69Vu7iqaQmOdzgAAGtgyrbE/s1600/etsycrushspring.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvYMqkyubRut9iqE4US1LVCaliX8arpcjSyKJl9CeCen3lK7dyrBnSt52RX-1KAa1iB09cGBqjCUIJ1OTlg4SQN9xkgAmz0cBPcYkQFIPNKIvlqvKAQApt69Vu7iqaQmOdzgAAGtgyrbE/s1600/etsycrushspring.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">1.</span> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/95115564/spring-bunting-upcycled-bunting-made">Spring Bunting by Peony and Thistle</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This Spring bunting has been upcycled from the 1906 book, The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, which was written by Edith Holden and depicts in paintings the flora and fauna of the English countryside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">2.</span> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/95944529/lavender-bird-locket-delicate-spring">Lavender Bird Locket by Khara Ledonne</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These small vintage lockets are hand painted with tiny pictures and fold up into a gold ball pendant. The pictures themselves are the same diameter as a dime!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">3.</span> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/76756876/desk-organizer-desktop-zen-garden">Zen Garden Desktop Organizer by KarolinFelixDream</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sold from Dublin, Ireland, I love the simple design of this Organzier/ Zen Garden. Simple, clean, and fresh. Why not bring a little outside to your desk?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">4.</span> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/94743860/spring-floral-charm-bracelet">Spring Floral Charm Bracelet by Nest Pretty Things</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Made by Tamar in Vermont, this bracelet has a real retro vibe, and I love the colors. It really satisfies my "frill" addiction, and the packaging is also adorable:</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjtHDOFsC4AlZWwSJIE9EpKl3V4ijPTs1CXboCl8lW4G-qfgU4Qk8Xhz6DpMpobPqx6wObUo6zhdf47tVWxdvKSkHRBYgiV8JFOwjbI5hpOsqZxenEt9C0pvJgb_N0Dw0vz9OtK4qd9fI/s1600/newdeskbefore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjtHDOFsC4AlZWwSJIE9EpKl3V4ijPTs1CXboCl8lW4G-qfgU4Qk8Xhz6DpMpobPqx6wObUo6zhdf47tVWxdvKSkHRBYgiV8JFOwjbI5hpOsqZxenEt9C0pvJgb_N0Dw0vz9OtK4qd9fI/s1600/newdeskbefore.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I've been using this desk in my sewing room. It was so cluttered and cramped I felt claustrophobic every time I sat down. For one thing, there are two shelves, which leaves little room for even my laptop to sit comfortably. The only space on the desk itself is covered with a sorting tool that doesn't really help because I can't see what's in it, anyway. I have no proper storage for my three boxes of fabric, so they just sit there stacked next to it. I was placing things on shelves I never really use, and this left no space for what I do. Plus, there's a terrific cork board behind a good part of it, too, but the third shelf makes it impossible to use! So I decided to make my own "mood board" and go about making this space a bit more "Feng Shui".<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First I unscrewed and took out the second shelf. Better already!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV7xCSMSIIIldIPxOa6nd3fFf5Kxso3xYJpZhKzp46zOAMrDr6X9LlH4gw2Yj-UVblVs_yjNph83WaUVZXYXDzLfHj69eypR6msrYu5RZQd102BAMzVA9UcBuAfhaDPAINIoHo0xdbZA8/s1600/newdeskstep1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV7xCSMSIIIldIPxOa6nd3fFf5Kxso3xYJpZhKzp46zOAMrDr6X9LlH4gw2Yj-UVblVs_yjNph83WaUVZXYXDzLfHj69eypR6msrYu5RZQd102BAMzVA9UcBuAfhaDPAINIoHo0xdbZA8/s1600/newdeskstep1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I found some awesome fabric and cut it to the exact measurements of the cork and ironed some iron-on adhesive to the back of it. Iron-on adhesive rocks. It turns anything into iron-on. Love it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibyQZ0seS4C9lt25J9VkQwvKQILpGBZ8NndVTcXVvgKYEO-73NZOGTZz0tc3sMQJECX7Jc35mrANh54EZBP-g1xBQrfZTJVSbNYqdtK4ISvGH6Q1MhCCKfxiDqkmW4XsUeOZDgUUPObdU/s1600/newdeskironon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibyQZ0seS4C9lt25J9VkQwvKQILpGBZ8NndVTcXVvgKYEO-73NZOGTZz0tc3sMQJECX7Jc35mrANh54EZBP-g1xBQrfZTJVSbNYqdtK4ISvGH6Q1MhCCKfxiDqkmW4XsUeOZDgUUPObdU/s1600/newdeskironon.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I just ironed it onto the cork with no steam. If you're going to do this, I advise you to turn off the steam on your iron. And don't let the iron sit anywhere too long, and be careful not to let it sit too long on any part of the wood! I held up the fabric onto the cork board with two thumb tacks. I swept across it from top to bottom, center to the outsides. Again, take your time, don't let the iron sit anywhere too long, ok?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguuIl_dR2BBZvGu9Imn5gCWFXQv58vdEU6q-6uTAadVU3BqRl-T9ldI9cZOxx2LFgNM-4PznHrgoeT8sPewS-SQgRt5wJIxVG_L4VTs3A7yoYlgWxDbcPvw_2R5TNrO6_h48zArrYqkqg/s1600/newdeskstep4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguuIl_dR2BBZvGu9Imn5gCWFXQv58vdEU6q-6uTAadVU3BqRl-T9ldI9cZOxx2LFgNM-4PznHrgoeT8sPewS-SQgRt5wJIxVG_L4VTs3A7yoYlgWxDbcPvw_2R5TNrO6_h48zArrYqkqg/s1600/newdeskstep4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I added a retro seam binding to the edges with a glue gun. I used a piece of paper under the glue gun when I put it down so it wouldn't get on the wood.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNPF5sjTzRZB1h1RPj3QgDhpEUGg-AuqlN83s-Sn9kY4D4PfkEV5gn0yssDRIH4Tfyp2cpLS42gcEDhLAa4oiyHTp_HAVObzN8XKPRgGTOWnSzoZRfVLpWYjAiVgTrXvDZW1uEjFEy0VY/s1600/newdeskstep5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNPF5sjTzRZB1h1RPj3QgDhpEUGg-AuqlN83s-Sn9kY4D4PfkEV5gn0yssDRIH4Tfyp2cpLS42gcEDhLAa4oiyHTp_HAVObzN8XKPRgGTOWnSzoZRfVLpWYjAiVgTrXvDZW1uEjFEy0VY/s1600/newdeskstep5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also went to Target and found easy storage for my fabric that cost me only $25. Goodbye boxes! I found there was very little I really needed on the shelves I had before so I put those away in a closet. Any files I had in my sorter I put into pretty folders and stood upright in magazine holders, which gave me more space. Then I used sewing pins and old sewing needles to pin up inspiration on my mood board.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
Although I am a Passover girl, I had to share these amazing egg dyeing techniques. I love Easter eggs, and to be honest, making them was a great delight when I was young. My grandparents celebrated Easter and I remember wearing the most ruffled dress imaginable, carrying my basket, and looking for eggs. I think they still have footage of me slipping and falling on my ruffle-butt undies, Mary Janes and lace-edged socks high in the air!<br />
<br />
In the Passover Seder, an egg is placed on the Seder plate to represent the coming of spring and new life. We dyed those eggs as well (our own family tradition). Here's some terrific ways to snazz up your lawn or your Seder plate:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #e06666; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Eggs Dyed with Embroidery Floss</span></div>
<br />
These eggs by Margarita on her Greek blog, <a href="http://syntagesapospiti.blogspot.com/2011/04/blog-post_17.html">Syntages...Apo Spiti</a>, are so cool and they look like they've been resting in a nest of yarn! Follow the link to her blog to learn this technique. This is such a unique look, and a wonderful idea! I think I might try wrapping instead of cutting, or trying to make designs with the thread. I'm definitely inspired!<br />

I cannot seem to get over this blue and red theme I have completely by accident with all our decor. Then I discovered <a href="http://www.johnrobshaw.com/home.htm">John Robshaw Textiles</a>. Now I think I'm lost to it. for some reason a lot of our artwork has blues and reds in it, and our couch is a chili pepper red leather. I've been looking for ways to add a light and airiness to this combo, because we've been pairing it with dark woods, and lots of ethnic touches, which can make it all seem very heavy. The lovely thing about John Robshaw Textiles is that they are ethnic, which I love, and block-printed with the daintiest designs. Can't you image a beautiful spring breeze blowing through the room?<br />

I fully encourage you to read more about <a href="http://www.johnrobshaw.com/about.htm">John's story</a>, because he has traveled so many places and learned the various techniques you see in his shop. His description of block-printing is an obvious reflection of his passion for this art form:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 11px; line-height: 18px; text-align: -webkit-left;">"It's so simple and natural. You touch a woodblock to wet clay and then to the fabric. After the clay dries, you dip the cloth into the indigo vat and the clay stays on. One dip gives the fabric a sky-blue color, two dips and it deepens to cobalt, three dips and its a saturated midnight blue. Then the fabric is laid out to dry in the sun and later the clay is washed off. The dyer says the indigo vats are like a mistress because they need constant attention. I was completely fascinated by the dyeing and printing processes, as well as how the finished product is used. Textiles become intimate companions in daily life, whether as a pillow, bedcover or sarong." </span>

<span style="font-family: "verdana";"><span style="font-size: 11px; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
In addition to his block-printing, John Robshaw sells a collection of found objects, furniture, blankets, and pillows named "Souk". I absolutely adore this blanket, which is made from vintage fabrics collected from around the world.

<div style="text-align: left;">
We are pregnant! My husband and I are expecting our first child in September. So now you can understand the REAL reason I haven't been posting much! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I found out when Jason was away on a business trip, which was torture! Everyday he'd call and ask how I was and I had to nonchalant it and pretend like nothing much happened. The news also came a week before we had to move, and I had just spent the week prior packing everything early (thank goodness). We had been trying for almost a year and I honestly didn't believe it. I think I tested every morning (4 tests) until Jason came back just to be sure. Then I put the tests and these onesies into a box labeled "baby's room" in huge letters and placed it prominently on the huge stack of our packed boxes. Things didn't go as planned, because I'm terrible at keeping a poker face! I think he must have known the minute he walked in the door, before he even saw the box. I wanted him to just find it, but there was no way that was happening before I gave it away. Anyhow, it was still a wonderful coming-home present!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Luckily my first trimester has been fairly easy and I'm excited for the next few weeks. Soon I will be able to feel movement, and find out if it's a boy or a girl. I think it's a boy, Jason thinks it's a girl. For now I'm enjoying snacking, reading up on everything, and taking it easy. I have a feeling my blog may get a bit more baby-oriented for a little while, but it will be the most awesome, creative, unique baby stuff ever! I'll still try to keep my eyes open for amazing thread art, great DIY, and fabulous Etsy finds also, so no worries.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One thing is for sure, this baby will not want for art, music, or power tools!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">H</span>ullo, Creatives! While sewing costumes for <i>The Music Man</i> it finally dawned on me that I really need a thread rack. It's bad. The tails of loose thread from each spool are forming their own united cluster and I'm afraid they will morph into some sort of super being that will take it's revenge on me (using swan snips, of course).<br />
<br />
Ok, enough joking. There's the boring white rack that everyone knows, or if you want to be cool, there's these three stylish DIY projects I found on the web. Now to figure out which one I'll try...<br />

Like most costume and history buffs, I'm obsessed with Downton Abbey. So lots of sewing was done while watching. This is a dress for the character Marion in <i>The Music Man, </i>which is set in 1912 also. I'm super proud!<br />

We also had more art than I knew what to do with. This is why I love the new fad of art collages. Who wants a boring wall filled with all images that look entirely the same? And who has that? The beauty of art collages is that just about anything can go up on the wall. Usually you get a quirky conversation piece that's a well-rounded representation of all your interests. This is nice because it combines the things I love with what Jason loves. What do you think?<br />

I started by laying everything on the floor until I got an interesting collection of things and moved things around until it felt "right" or balanced. You don't have to do that. You can just take some nails to the wall and do whatever. Great, right?</div>

Especially in mediums that have been around for centuries, like textiles. Yesterday I checked out the <a href="http://www.texprint.org.uk/index.php/designers/">Texprint 2011</a> designers. Texprint features 24 recently graduated textile designers with the hope of exposing them to the industry and, well, showing the world how phenomenal they are. Visit their site and their <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/53337068@N05/5982892004/in/photostream/">Flickr photostream</a> to see more images of all these truly talented designers.<br />

The fantastic imagination of Emma Shipley is evident in these textiles, all from original sketches of her own. So maybe Gorilla rib cages aren't your thing. Boy are you missing out! Emma has a <a href="http://emmajshipley.com/index.php">fantastic site</a> where she sells these designs on Pashminas, silk Georgette scarves, and silk twill scarves. She has won several awards for her work.</div>

Lauren Bowker has developed a way to make clothes that change and live. For her recent project, PHNX, she used a technique she developed, where she uses thermal chromatic dyes. In her own words:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
"I have embarked upon a journey to visualize, control and construct a piece that constantly evolves, lives and dies in front of our eyes. Through the expansion of many types of ink, I have developed an original take on dynamic chromic imaging. using focused thermal beams, sequentially controlled through computer software to allow my pieces to take on lives of their own. "</div>

To see this technique in real time, check out the video on her site, <a href="http://www.phnx.co/page12.html">PHNX</a>.</div>

Finally, I loved the tribal designs of Marie Parsons. I cannot seem to find a site for her, but thank you to <a href="http://www.ameliasmagazine.com/art/royal-college-of-art-ma-degree-show-2011-review-textile-design/2011/07/01/">Amelia's Magazine</a>, for the photo of her fantastic trunk. Happy New Year! I spent the past week enjoying the company of family and two terrific nieces: ages 3 and 5. It's amazing how quickly time passes with children. And now we're in 2012, holy cow! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9sfx7DR32EwhRAz9KT8Ub5q3i3KPJ367T64IW0U-7eRzqrF7_feQJI-hzZdy6cYcC00pIwL16mGnDGPtotCMDiASAKGmPpsh86y6t8_BNEjsSX_KwCxKzjSCvHqYhDOsa8P2LtczEilk/s1600/hanukkahgarland.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9sfx7DR32EwhRAz9KT8Ub5q3i3KPJ367T64IW0U-7eRzqrF7_feQJI-hzZdy6cYcC00pIwL16mGnDGPtotCMDiASAKGmPpsh86y6t8_BNEjsSX_KwCxKzjSCvHqYhDOsa8P2LtczEilk/s1600/hanukkahgarland.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Remember that lovely image I posted from BHG.com of the <a href="http://www.dontsewangry.blogspot.com/2011/12/hanukkah-love.html">dreidel garland</a>? Well, I set out to make it for my home. If you love these patterns, you can also just print and cut them out on heavy card stock. I wanted to use different colors, so here is my version. <span style="text-align: center;">First, download and make a template from the printable by </span><a href="http://www.thepartydress.net/2011/12/mod-hanukkah-dreidel-free-download/" style="text-align: center;">The Party Dress</a><span style="text-align: center;">:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguAuoS58-3JKutcAJYHXP_oc8BVxPLjYsUBuxlFaXWL0MXqjr9YiOMSKJGCGG1x1lqVbMJxKd3_ru40HFdeQS95BlgXw0EdAz5CnTKgJP0XUQlAqeKPE-jFxL7-OpPLNFyPOiwHOulHXM/s1600/dreideltemplate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguAuoS58-3JKutcAJYHXP_oc8BVxPLjYsUBuxlFaXWL0MXqjr9YiOMSKJGCGG1x1lqVbMJxKd3_ru40HFdeQS95BlgXw0EdAz5CnTKgJP0XUQlAqeKPE-jFxL7-OpPLNFyPOiwHOulHXM/s1600/dreideltemplate.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then you will need all sorts of colored card stock. Trace the template, fold the tabs, and assemble. It's best to trace with a pencil on the back side of the paper, making sure you use a ruler to mark the fold lines, too. Press down enough with the pencil to make an indentation in your thick card stock. This will make the paper fold just where you want it to. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfFNf3rEgl42xhSyyS-EKwvCpB1FYF3havay72Pm3q0tb7TRAcdc9FjYK1MTf6Yck6pZsZpoyi1guxjqJKjxofaz5HTUU7X1GrIDLojFvmJ6aKJ8tjCzoWaArbEeCWmxIxCGlOt7gbW-M/s1600/hanukkahgarland1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfFNf3rEgl42xhSyyS-EKwvCpB1FYF3havay72Pm3q0tb7TRAcdc9FjYK1MTf6Yck6pZsZpoyi1guxjqJKjxofaz5HTUU7X1GrIDLojFvmJ6aKJ8tjCzoWaArbEeCWmxIxCGlOt7gbW-M/s1600/hanukkahgarland1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Use double stick tape or hot glue to assemble.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeFXmohnzGPtVLMDpXn45lgSNjnAuChUl3_4ybjYxQZy7lt0AMVL2F3MKzyu3vxAhl51oOhHsl_B2PwjSbmUd2ESKLWTI5l9Cc-YyEkvG2BYq9JnQPoPq0uAF6dBSt8htyQQdHVdslQvw/s1600/hanukkahgarland2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeFXmohnzGPtVLMDpXn45lgSNjnAuChUl3_4ybjYxQZy7lt0AMVL2F3MKzyu3vxAhl51oOhHsl_B2PwjSbmUd2ESKLWTI5l9Cc-YyEkvG2BYq9JnQPoPq0uAF6dBSt8htyQQdHVdslQvw/s1600/hanukkahgarland2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Make a bunch! Next you will need to make the stem of the dreidel. I used a square balsa wood dowel and cut it with an x-acto. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now get a large upholstery needle and some cotton string. Knot before and after each dreidel. You will need a delicate touch in poking through so you don't crush your dreidels! I found twisting the needle with a </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
little pressure was enough to poke a hole.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"It is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it and all of its supporters are happy."</div>
